Last night, Donald Trump signed several executive orders targeting our LGBTQ+ community. Announcing these actions all at once is meant to create distraction and chaos—however, they will take time to go into effect and will be challenged in court.

Here are just a few of the actions the new administration took:

Defining “Sex” at the Federal Level in Strictly Biological “Male” or “Female” Terms. This could ultimately exclude gender identity from the enforcement of sex nondiscrimination laws and the implementation of rules.

Reversal of the Bostock Executive Order, clearing the way for federal agencies to roll back non-discrimination rules for gender identity and sexual orientation. This could potentially have sweeping implications for the entire LGBTQ+ community in housing, at school and in healthcare settings.

Directing the State Department and Department of Homeland Security to Remove “X” Gender Markers on Government-Issued Identity Documents. This would include passports, visas and Global Entry cards.

Banning DEI Initiatives in All Federal Agencies. This could have a chilling domino effect, resulting in a less equitable workplace and society.

Removing Protections that Ensured Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Are Protected at School as Part of Title IX. This will make it harder for LGBTQ+ students to be protected from discrimination and sexual harassment at school.

Bathroom Bans on Federal Property. This directs federal agencies to limit women/girl-only and men/boy-only restrooms and other single-sex facilities based on sex assigned at birth.

We are the Human Rights Campaign and respond when our human rights are in jeopardy. You can be sure we will show up for our LGBTQ+ community in court, Congress halls, and local communities.

The proposed changes attempt to reduce equality for our community in the workplace, education, housing and healthcare. LGBTQ+ people live and work in every community, and we need and deserve the same basic protections as everyone else to go about our daily lives. You can help by signing your name to HRC’s 100,000 Actions in 100 Days Campaign. Show that you believe in full equality for all!

Yesterday’s actions are not only mean-spirited; many are unconstitutional. Our lawyers and policy experts are analyzing the proposed changes and their implications, and many of the executive orders contain directions inconsistent with existing law, Supreme Court precedent, and the Constitution! The President may believe that he can change those laws with a stroke of his pen, but he does not have the power to change them unilaterally.

I know these policies are scary, and you probably have a lot of questions about what they mean and how they’ll impact LGBTQ+ people in Nevada and nationwide. HRC is scheduling a Membership Town Hall to walk you through everything we know and the implications for you and your loved ones.

During tumultuous times like these, community is so important. We can lean on each other for support, ideas, hope, and love. If our LGBTQ+ community and allies support each other and get involved, we will be okay.

You can start making a difference easily today: Sign your name to our 100,000 Actions in 100 Days Challenge and go on record that you’re firmly planted on the right side of history!

There will be more challenges ahead, so I hope you will continue to be someone we can count on to help us make positive changes for LGBTQ+ people. Every action and every generous contribution will help HRC move quickly to protect equality and the rights of LGBTQ+ people. Visit hrc.org for more info.
