Renowned pianist Philip Fortenberry and singer Elisa Fiorillo will star in The Classics with Class at Myron’s at The Smith Center on Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 7 p.m.
The enchanting concert will celebrate timeless music from legendary artists, including Barbra Streisand, Eydie Gorme, Judy Garland, and Julie Andrews. Experience the exquisite piano artistry of Philip alongside Elisa’s masterful vocals in an intimate setting that brings these beloved classics to life. The concert will also feature talented musicians: Carlos Elorza on bass, Don Meoli from Jersey Boys on drums, and Ramiro Nasello on trumpet.
“Performing with Elisa is always a complete joy,” said Fortenberry. “I first saw and heard her when she presented and performed an original piece for The Composers Showcase a few years ago and became an immediate fan. I’m excited to make music with such a beautiful artist, sit at the piano, support her voice and her total heart through her songs.”
The audience will enjoy iconic songs “Big Spender,” “Miss Otis Regrets,” “I Could Have Danced All Night,” and “All I Ask of You” (from Phantom of the Opera). Philip will be performing Chopin’s Etude in tribute to Elisa’s father, who was a concert pianist and one of only a handful of students who had the opportunity to study with the great Vladimir Horowitz.
“I think what makes the classics timeless is a substantial lyric paired with unforgettable melodies and harmonic structures that are easily recognized. They evoke an emotional response from listeners as well as performers that make us almost need to hear them, to experience them time and time again,” explained Philip.
Fortenberry’s distinguished career of performing 60-plus years on the bench includes being one of the most sought-after pianists on the Great White Way and the recipient of the coveted “Ghostlight Award” as “Best Musician on Broadway.” He was the hand/body double for actor Michael Douglas in HBO’s biopic “Behind the Candelabra,” and has performed on concert stages from Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center and The White House, featured as a headliner to rave reviews. Always showcasing his signature playing style, southern charm and prestigious career, he performed in 10 Broadway shows and eight national tours, including Jesus Christ Superstar, Cats, Ragtime and The Lion King.
Acclaimed vocalist and lyricist Fiorillo is known for her incredible career as a solo artist and performances with Prince and his band, The New Power Generation, touring globally until he died in 2016. She recently performed at Caesars Palace with Josh Groban and has Billboard-charting songwriting credits. She catapulted into fame at 15 after winning the 1985 Star Search talent show. She later signed with Chrysalis Records and worked with John “Jellybean” Benitez, achieving international success with the hit “Who Found Who.” She has released three albums, directed TV series and voiced characters in anime. She is currently involved in multiple recording projects. With a blend of iconic covers and original songs, Fiorillo captivates audiences, sharing the passion, strength, and emotion that have defined her remarkable career.
