PHOTOS: The Center’s Honorarium draws 800; anounces big news

This year’s Honorarium had the theme “Health care for all.” About 800 people attended the annual fundraising event that raised a whopping $6.3 million.

CEO John Waldron and his crew at The Center had some big news, too. The evening unveiled the Gavin J. Goorjian Community Health Center, a new facility at 921 S. Las Vegas Blvd.

Much of the money raised was made up of large gifts from trusts and estates.

The $3.5 million gift from the estate of Gavin J. Goorjian, a community leader and former board member of The Center. The medical facility was named in his honor.

A $2.2 million contribution from the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust was presented by trustee Walter Panzirer. The funds will be used to provide physical and mental health care to patients.

Several awards were received.

  • Monica Brown won the inaugural Russell Davis Volunteer of the Year Award.
  • The Person of the Year Award went to Keith Boman, M.D. The local physician made history as the first cardiologist in Las Vegas to implant a cardiac pacemaker. He has been recognized multiple times as one of Las Vegas Life Magazine’s “Best Doctors.” He has more than 40 years experience in cardiology. With deep ties to the community, he is a graduate of Clark High School. Dr. Boman has been a longtime supporter of LGBTQ+ organizations, both locally and nationally. He was also instrumental in securing the charitable gift to create The Smith’s Center for the Performing Arts.
  • Torrey Russell received the Lanny D. Love Hero Award. He is the founding artistic director of Las Vegas-based Broadway in the Hood. The nonprofit theater performs worldwide. His work with young people has given them a chance to rise above adversity and given them a chance to foster creativity and experience hope and change.
  • The Organization of the Year went to NV Energy Foundation. The local utility’s foundation provides grants to local community nonprofits. It is committed to supporting diverse communities, including LGBTQ+ causes.

Hope to have these award winners in the studio with Jimmy, soon. More coverage to follow. Watch for videos and interviews in the. coming weeks.
