Acclaimed singer Michelle Johnson, known as “The First Lady of Jazz in Las Vegas,” returns to Myron’s at The Smith Center on June 19 with a performance of Freedom – A Juneteenth Celebration. This inspiring show aims to foster pride and a sense of shared heritage by celebrating the essence of Juneteenth through music, dance, and storytelling.

This event will be much more than a concert. It will include multidimensional elements that bring together many aspects of freedom, resilience, identity, and collective empowerment, reminding all involved that the work of liberation continues from one generation to the next.

A musical journey through history and heritage

The evening will feature a rich blend of spirituals, jazz, Broadway favorites, soul classics, and contemporary selections, creating a layered musical experience that reflects Johnson’s personal heritage and artistic influences, including special performances by guest artists and a reflection on African American history and culture.

“I am excited to be returning with a vibrant concert experience that blends music, movement and the power of story to explore freedom in all its forms,” Johnson said. “Celebrating resilience, identity and collective joy, Freedom – A Juneteenth Celebration reflects on the meaning of the historically celebrated day of emancipation and liberation of African American people while weaving in my Liberian roots and West African ancestry, the musical influences that shaped my artistry, and my own journey through the lens of freedom.”

Johnson’s family history provides a remarkable backdrop for the performance. Her mother is from Detroit, while her father was Liberian. She is a direct descendant of Elijah Johnson, one of the founding fathers of Liberia, as well as Hilary R.W. Johnson, Liberia’s 11th president and the nation’s first president born on African soil.

Guest artists and special appearances

The concert will feature an impressive lineup of guest performers and speakers, including Clint Holmes, Serena Henry, Toscha Comeaux, Avana Christie, Skye Dee Miles, Jassen Allen, Chondell Leland and Lannie Counts.

Adding historical perspective and personal reflection, Johnson will share a reflection written exclusively for this concert by William Alex Haley Jr., grandson of acclaimed author Alex Haley (Roots). Special guest Sherry Gordy, daughter of Motown Founder Berry Gordy, will also make an appearance about the impact of Motown.

An accomplished ensemble

Supporting Johnson is a distinguished band led by Musical Director and pianist Reggie Johnson, former musical director for Boyz II Men. The ensemble includes drummer Marshawn Fondren, guitarist Johnny Johnson, bassist John Belzaguy, and percussionist David Gervais. Choreography is by Avree Walker.

A message for everyone

Although rooted in the significance of Juneteenth, Johnson emphasizes that the show’s themes of freedom, resilience, and hope are universal. She hopes audiences of all backgrounds will see themselves reflected in the performance and leave feeling inspired and connected through the power of music and community.

“As many of you know, my concert themes focus on unity, human empowerment and the transformative power of music,” Johnson said. “The show will inspire you, and I promise you will leave feeling great. It is going to be a fun and inspirational night of music.”

Johnson has performed at Myron’s for the 25th time this evening. Her concerts have produced sold-out events focused on unity, empowerment and connection. Johnson also continues to use music to unite individuals from different cultures, backgrounds, and ages.

Freedom – A Juneteenth Celebration is made up of amazing musicians, great stories, and an emotional celebration that invites the people of Las Vegas to come together, acknowledge our past, rejoice in community, and experience a memorable evening of freedom, joy, and hope.
