From Dr. Frank-N-Furter to Pennywise, Tim Curry built a career on unforgettable characters, but his greatest legacy may be the freedom he gave audiences to embrace their own individuality.
British actor Tim Curry, popular with generations of fans, has died at 80. According to reports, Curry died on Aug. 25 at his Los Angeles home. His manager confirmed the news of his death, but did not disclose the cause.
But for some people, he was not just an actor.
It’s Dr. Frank-N-Furter.
Curry became an icon through his portrayal of Frank-N-Furter in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Curry played the character in the original Broadway production of “The Rocky Horror Show” and in the show’s 1975 film adaptation. In corsets, fishnets, heels and makeup, Curry created an iconic character that is sexy, provocative, theatrical and absolutely fearless.
“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” was more than just a film. Its themes of sexual liberation, gender fluidity, camp and self-expression fostered pride and a sense of belonging. Curry’s Frank-N-Furter embodied fearless self-acceptance, inspiring audiences to embrace their true selves without hesitation.
That was part of Curry’s extraordinary gift as a performer.
A Career Far Beyond Frank-N-Furter
While “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” was Curry’s signature role, his diverse acting career demonstrated his wide-ranging talent. He received three Tony Award nominations for his Broadway performances in “Amadeus,” “My Favorite Year” and “Spamalot.” He also appeared in movies “Annie,” “Clue,” “The Hunt for Red October” and “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.”
Then there was Pennywise.
Curry’s terrifying performance as the shape-shifting clown in the 1990 television adaptation of “Stephen King’s It” introduced him to another generation of fans — this time by showing how effectively he could move from camp theatricality to genuine horror.
His work also extended into animation and voice acting.
A Las Vegas Connection Through Rocky Horror
“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” has long been part of entertainment and midnight movie history, with people dressing up as their favorite characters and shouting along during the screening.
That spirit fits Las Vegas.
His legacy as Frank-N-Furter will continue to live on as the iconic franchise enters a new era, with Sphere Entertainment Co. recently announcing plans to bring “The Rocky Horror Show” to Sphere in 2027, ensuring Curry’s influence endures for future generations.

He loves stepping into Frank-N-Furter because the character seems capable of getting away with almost anything — just as he did in the original play and film.
“I’m still wearing the same corset and fishnets that I had from 20-some years ago. The fishnets have more holes in them, but I think that’s a little bit of the character. The corset still fits, although I have to lie down flat now to button it up,” DeCar said.
“My heart is broken over the loss of Tim Curry, who was one of my idols. I was always told I sounded and even looked like him when I sang, so bringing ‘Rocky’s Horror’ to our wedding has always felt especially personal to me. Tim inspired us to be bold, have fun and give people permission to be exactly who they are. I hope we can continue to pay that forward through the joy we bring our couples and honor the incredible legacies he leaves behind.”
Dr. Frank-N-Furter will keep entering the room — and Tim Curry will always be there with him.
